This volume brings together a cast of leading experts to carefully explore how the history and iconography of slavery has been invoked to support a series of government interventions, activist projects, legal instruments, and rhetorical performances. However well-intentioned these interventions might be, they nonetheless remain subject to a host of limitations and complications. Recent efforts to combat contemporary slavery are too often sensationalist, self-serving, and superficial and, therefore, end up failing the crucial test of speaking truth to power.
The widely held notion that antislavery is one of those rare issues that "transcends" politics or ideology is only sustainable because the underlying issues at stake have been constructed and demarcated in a way that minimizes direct challenges to dominant political and economic interests. This must change. By providing an original approach to the underlying issues at stake, Contemporary Slavery will help readers understand the political practices that have been concealed beneath the popular rhetoric and establishes new conversations between scholars of slavery and trafficking and scholars of human rights and social movements.

The Council of Europe is without a doubt one of the most important international organizations. Since its creation in 1949, its genesis, legal foundations, structure and achievements have been the focus of a great deal of attention.
This publication’s analysis of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) appears to be well founded on motives which are not just related to familiarizing the readers with the achievements of the Council of Europe. The first area of the author’s interest is international law and international relations, which analyse the activities of international organisations. The second is constitutional law and the comparative study of political systems as the activities of PACE involve such notions characteristic for these branches of learning as “representation”, “delegation”, “parliamentary control”, “relations between the legislative and executive branches of government”. The author intended this book to bear witness to Poles’ and Poland’s interest in the work of the Council of Europe and to contribute to a better understanding of the achievements of this international organisation among the wider European public.

This annual report showcases the vast range of reports, projects and intergovernmental meetings that UNCTAD worked on in 2018. It will be a source of vital information to representatives of United Nations member countries, partners in the intergovernmental system and civil society, academics, the media and anyone with an interest in global economic justice.
The report looks at UNCTAD’s work through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals – a 17-point plan at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The report maps the goals onto UNCTAD’s mandate. This approach highlights the relevance of trade to aims such as reduced inequalities (Goal 10), industry, innovation and infrastructure (Goal 9) and decent jobs and growth (Goal 8).
