World Tourism Day was established during the third session of the World tourism organization’s General assembly in September 1979 and it has been observed annually on September 27 since 1980. The time was not picked at random. It coincides with a watershed moment in tourism history: on September 27, 1970, the World Tourism Organization adopted its Charter.

The goal of the holiday is to advance tourism, emphasise its value to the global economy, and strengthen ties amongst international citizens. The purpose of this event is to show how tourism can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The festival is observed in the majority of the world's nations, and it adopts a different theme each year. The official World Tourism Day celebrations in 2022 will be held on the Indonesian island of Bali with the theme "Rethinking Tourism," as decided at the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly.

One of the top priorities for the socioeconomic growth of the Republic of Belarus is the development of tourism. The state's "Belarus Hospitable" programme, which runs from 2021 to 2025, aims to build a modern, competitive tourist complex and increase the sector's contribution to the growth of the national economy.
