Peace is one of the most pressing needs of humanity, defining the most important mission of the UN and unifying its work across the planet: from peacemaking and preventive diplomacy to the promotion of human rights and development.
By establishing this Day, the UN dedicated it to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within States and peoples and between them. The Assembly declared that the International Day of Peace will be celebrated as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence and invited all States and peoples to observe the cessation of hostilities during this day.
Every year, Peace Day is dedicated to a specific topic. The theme of 2023 is "Action for Peace: Our desire to achieve #Global Goals". It is a call to action that underscores our personal and collective responsibility to strengthen peace. The consolidation of peace contributes to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and their achievement forms a culture of peace for all.
