The thematic exhibition "World without Wars and Violence!" dedicated to the International Day of Peace is open from September 14 to October 19 in the Official Documents Service Department (room 207).

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly (resolution A/RES/36/67 in 1981 and was celebrated annually on the third Tuesday of September – the opening day of the regular sessions of the Assembly. Twenty years later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution A/RES/55/282, in which it decided that since 2002, the International Day of Peace will be celebrated annually on September 21.

The proposed exhibition has about 100 documents in Russian, English and German. These are books, brochures, mimeographed UN materials, periodicals, booklets.

The exposition will acquaint readers and users of the library with the multifaceted activities of the UN and other international organizations in the field of maintaining peace and international security.

Among the exhibits presented at the exhibition are international legal documents, encyclopedias and reference books, monographs, research materials on the problems of war and peace, political and legal studies on confidence– and security-building measures, materials of scientific and practical conferences, round tables, scientific reports, textbooks.

Most of the exposition consists of documents of international organizations – reports and reviews of the UN, such as the report of the UN Special Committee for Peacekeeping, reports of the Secretary-General on the agenda for peace and conflict prevention, a brief historical overview of the "UN and disarmament", etc.

The exhibition includes the following thematic sections:

  • Peace and peaceful coexistence. International agreements and international legal instruments on peacekeeping
  • Disarmament, nuclear disarmament
  • Peacekeeping operations, peacemaking and peacebuilding
  • Fight against terrorism and nuclear terrorism
  • Prevention of armed conflicts
  • Culture of peace

The exposition will be of interest to specialists in the field of world politics, diplomacy, international relations, international law, conflictology, as well as students, undergraduates, political and public figures and everyone who cares about peace on Earth.

Peace is one of the most pressing needs of humanity, defining the most important mission of the UN and unifying its work across the planet: from peacemaking and preventive diplomacy to the promotion of human rights and development.

By establishing this Day, the UN dedicated it to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within States and peoples and between them. The Assembly declared that the International Day of Peace will be celebrated as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence and invited all States and peoples to observe the cessation of hostilities during this day.

Every year, Peace Day is dedicated to a specific topic. The theme of 2023 is "Action for Peace: Our desire to achieve #Global Goals". It is a call to action that underscores our personal and collective responsibility to strengthen peace. The consolidation of peace contributes to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and their achievement forms a culture of peace for all.
