The exhibition “Font: litera in primo” was opened on October 29 at the National Library of Belarus on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts.

Mr Alexander Susha, Deputy Director General of the National Library of Belarus, Vsevolod Sventokhovsky, Dean of the Faculty of Design and Decorative and Applied Arts of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, Yekaterina Predko and Anastasia Samsonova, students of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts spoke at the event.

The exhibition presents the works of the students of the Academy of Arts and its teachers. Graphic letters are the result of practices, experiments in reconstruction and creation of new typefaces based on samples and examples of book covers, from F. Skaryna to Belarusian printed editions of 1918-1939.

The authors play around with the historical forms of fonts while preserving the characteristic features of the original edition, develop signs that are absent in the title and text originals, convey decorativeness, artistry, and the creative experience of authors-designers. Digital and handwritten compositions of writings presented in the exposition make a worthy contribution to the Belarusian font culture.

We inspired artists to take breathtaking turns in the writing of publications from the collection of the National Library of Belarus. During the grand opening, one could see the primary fonts compositions.

The combination of letters is primarily intended to convey information. The semantic, artistic, symbolic role of the initial letter (initial, the first letter of the chapter) is well known to researchers and amateurs. A font can also become a message, memory, information and, moreover, a work of art.

The exhibition is open until January 5, 2021.
The exhibition end date is subject to change.

The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Admission is by library card or by the ticket of the library's social and cultural center.
