A thematic book exhibition "Hurry up for good Deeds" dedicated to the International Day of Charity is on show in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (room 207g) From September 2 to October 4.

This Day was proclaimed at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly on December 17, 2012 (Resolution 67/105) and is celebrated annually on September 5.

In the resolution, the General Assembly expressed deep concern that today in the modern technological and constantly developing world, poverty as a result of social, economic and technological disasters still persists in all countries, regardless of their level of economic, social and cultural development. The Assembly invited all UN organizations, international, regional and non-governmental organizations to encourage and develop charity in every possible way and called on all people, regardless of age and gender, to give vent to the impulse that lives in the soul of every person to selfless action.

Charity, like volunteerism and philanthropy, is one of the most important needs of humanity. It brings people together and contributes to the creation of an inclusive and more resilient society, helps to overcome the consequences of severe humanitarian crises, and complements the activities of the state in the field of health, education, housing and population protection. Charity contributes to the development of dialogue between people of different cultures, religions and civilizations. It also helps protect the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people, making the voice of reason and mercy louder in conflict.

The Hungarian government initiated the establishment of an international day of charity, and the date is timed to the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910–1997). A renowned missionary and Catholic nun, she served the poor, the sick and orphans for half a century, doing charitable work, first in India and then in other countries. For her noble work, Mother Teresa was recognized in the world, and in 1979 she became a laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peace"

A total of about 60 documents are offered to readers at the exhibition. These are books, periodicals, documents of international organizations, brochures and booklets in Russian and English.

The exposition includes the following thematic sections:

  • The history of the development of charity in the world

  • Modern trends in charity: problems and prospects

  • Charity in Belarus

  • Public policy, business and charity

  • Activities of international and regional charitable foundations and organizations
