The thematic exhibition "Oceans: Exploration, Development, Conservation and Protection" dedicated to the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). The exhibition is on show in the International Organizations Document Room (room 207g) from 16 February to 15 March.

This Decade was officially proclaimed at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on December 5, 2017 (resolution A/RES/72/73).

The ocean covers 71% of the earth's surface - this is the largest biosphere of our planet, 80% of all living organisms in the world live in the ocean. It provides 50% of our oxygen needs, absorbs 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions and captures 90% of the additional thermal energy generated by these emissions. It is not only the “lungs of the planet” but also the largest carbon sink - a vital buffer in the fight against the effects of climate change. Scientific evidence suggests that the ocean faces unprecedented threats as a result of human activities. Its health and ability to sustain life deteriorate as the population grows and human activities expand.

The Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) will help consolidate efforts to reverse the cycle of deteriorating ocean health and create an enabling environment for sustainable ocean development. The decade will be held under the slogan "The Science We Need for the Ocean We Dream About!" Decade events are designed to bring together academia, policymakers, business and citizens to carry out a program of collaborative research and technological innovation.

The UN General Assembly approved seven goals for the Decade of Ocean Sciences until 2030:

  • clean ocean, sources of pollution are identified, reduced or eliminated;
  • healthy and resilient ocean, understanding, conserving, restoring and effectively managing marine ecosystems;
  • productive ocean, a sustainable food supply and a sustainable maritime economy;
  • predictable ocean, society understands changes in the state of the ocean and can respond to them;
  • safe ocean, human lives and livelihoods are protected from ocean hazards;
  • accessible ocean, open equitable access to data, information, technology and innovation;
  • inspirational and exciting ocean, society understands and values the ocean for its own well-being and sustainable development.

The exhibition offered to the attention of users introduces documents, including encyclopedias and reference books about the ocean and its inhabitants, international legal acts on the law of the sea, research materials, scientific reports, monographs, which provide information on the study and development of the sea depths, educational literature on history and geography seas and oceans. These documents will tell about the processes taking place in the World Ocean, as well as acquaint the reader with the international system of measures and rules aimed at ensuring the safety of maritime navigation and the protection of the marine environment and its inhabitants. They will help to draw the attention of the general public to the global problem of conserving the resources of the World Ocean, to deepen understanding of issues of its study and use, as well as to raise awareness of the ecological situation on our planet.

The exposition includes about 70 documents in Russian, English and French. These are books, periodicals, brochures, booklets, mimeographed documents.

The exhibition consists of the following thematic sections:

  • Great and mysterious ocean;
  • Study and development of the World Ocean;
  • Oceanology;
  • Geography, physics, chemistry and geology of the World Ocean;
  • Maritime law;
  • Activities of the International Maritime Organization (IMO);
  • System "ocean-atmosphere";
