An exhibition "The union of art and labor: dedication to the International Workers' Day (visual documents from the collection of the National Library of Belarus”) runs from 29 April to 17 May at reading room 307.
The history of the International Workers’ Day dates from 1 May 1886, when American workers in Chicago went on strike claiming the 8 hours work day. In July 1889 the Second International Workers Congresses made a decision to celebrate The 1 May annually in memory of the struggle of American workers.
Many long years the 1 May had been the major state holiday in the USSR. In Belarus the International Workers’ Day was renamed into the Labor Holiday in accordance with the President’s Decree for 26 March 1998. The 1 May is still celebrated the world over as the International Workers’ Day. The 1 May – the Holiday of Spring and Labor, the Labor Day, the Spring Day – is observed in 142 countries.
During many decades, the labor holiday has been an inspiration for new successes and achievements which find their reflection in the fine arts. Owing to their historical and art value, the best patterns are equal to the original works of art, becoming symbols of the epoch.
The exhibition presents more than 100 documents: posters, postcards, reproductions and news in pictures of the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS) dedicated to the Labor Day celebrations. Both old and modern artistic posters and postcards are on display.
The exposition is designed for all who is interested in the history of graphic and poster art.
