An exhibition titled “Under the High Star of Poetry”, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Belarusian poet, literary critic, PhD in philological sciences Mikola Arochka (1930–2013) is on show in the Belarusian Literature Reading Room (room 205) from 12 November through 30 December.

Mikola Arochka was born on December 10, 1930, in the Vetevichy village of the Slonim District of the Hrodna Region. He graduated from the Belarusian Department of the Belarus State University, and after a postgraduate programme in Ya. Kupala Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, with which more than 20 years of his life was connected, he worked with national periodicals. He began publishing his poetry in 1949. His poetry books included “Not all the Hayfields are Cut Down…”, “Mother's Rye”, “An Ear on the Stubble Field”, “The Memory of Grains” and others A milestone event of Belarusian poetry and the apex of the poetic artistry of Mikola Arochka was the release of dramatic poems based on the Belarusian history, which captivated the author. These were the poems “Judgement Day of Skaryna”, “The Mound”, “Kreva” and the latter of the written “Coronation of Mindaugas”.

As a literary critic, Mikola Arochka appeared in 1969 with his studies of the Belarusian poetry of 60-70s, artistry and aesthetics of poetry of the Maksim Tank, Valiantsina Tavlaja, Rygor Baradulin, Mikhail Lermontov and other poets. Mr Sergey Chigrin gave a high appraisal of the literary work of Mikola Arochka: “He was a thoughtful, mature, experienced literary critic. There's no one alike today in our literature”.

Anniversary exhibition is divided into three parts – “'Not all the Hayfields are Cut Down…': the artistic legacy of Arochka”, “The Researcher of a Poetic Word”, “Unforgettable Mіkola Arochka – a creator, a scientist, a human”. The first part presents books of selected works, various collections of poetry, books and periodicals with the poetry of Mikola Arochka. The second part shows literary and critical materials by Mikola Arochka, publications with the introduction of the literary critic, and pieces reviewed by him. The third shows materials about the artistry and scientific research of Mikola Arochka, interview with him, publications with biographical data.

More than 90 books and periodicals are displayed at the exhibition.


The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Admission is by a library card or by the Social and Cultural Center ticket.

"Soldier's Fate": on the 100th anniversary of Vasil Bykov and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.
