The National Library hosted a presentation of the book “Mills in Belarus: History and the Present” by Francishak Zhylka on October 7.
The book by Mr Zhylka was published in 2021 by the "Encyclopedix" publishing house. The author compiled a collection of photos from the early 21st century, capturing the rich, varied architecture of Belarus's water mills and their harmony with their surroundings. The book contains about 500 old and modern photographs, describes interesting technical and historical details, and makes use of the memories of descendants of Belarusian millers.
Ms Aksana Knizhnikava, Director General of the National Library of Belarus, opened the event with a welcome speech. Among the distinguished guests of the event Mr Tadevush Struzhecki, Chairperson of the Belarusian Foundation for Culture, and Mr Aliaksiej Jarotau, Chairperson of the Belarusian Geographical Society, Associate Professor, PhD in Geography shared their expert opinion. Mr Ihar Chakalau, Director of the "Encyclopedix" publishing house as well as Mr Francishak Zhylka, author of the book described in detail the history of the creation of the book and thanked the participants for their joint work and donated a copy of the book "Mills in Belarus: History and the Present" to the National Library.
The new edition allows all those interested in national history and local lore to learn more about the past of Belarusian milling and to obtain additional information about the industry.
For the presentation of the book, the National Library of Belarus prepared a one-evening exhibition of works by Francishak Zhylka and publications dedicated to the mills in Belarus.
