A seminar “The world begins from Polotsk…” was held in the Central Regional Library named after F. Skaryna in Polotsk on 12 April.


The event organizer was the Polotsk regional centralized library system. The seminar was dedicated to three dates, which are significant for Polotsk and the whole country: 500 years of to the Belarusian book-printing, 1155 years of the city of Polotsk, and 100 years of the newspaper Polacki vesnik (The Polotsk Bulletin).

Anna Burnosenko, the director of Polotsk regional centralized library system, welcomed the seminar attendees.

Reports devoted to the 500th anniversary of the Belarusian book-printing were read by Lyudmila Dediulina, the head of department of the Polotsk library, and Olga Dorofeeva, the chief librarian of the Vitebsk Regional Library named after V. Lenin.

Tatiana Sapiego, the head of section of the National Library of Belarus, presented a report on the methods of attracting children to book culture and held a workshop “Francysk Skaryna, the Belarusian printing pioneer”.

Reports on regional studies carried out by libraries were made by Ekaterina Yaskevich, the leading bibliographer of the Vitebsk Regional Library named after V. Lenin, Galina Maslovskaya, the head of the Branch Library number 2 named after A. Gertsen of the Polotsk regional centralized library system, Irina Vodneva, the head of the Regional Museum, a branch of the National Polotsk Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, Svetlana Gavrilova, the leading researcher of the Regional Museum, Ekaterina Yachmeneva, the methodologist of the Polotsk regional centralized library system.

A meeting with young scientists – teachers of the Polotsk State University, PhDs Оlga Gulyagina and Ekaterina Afanasyeva – and the young married couple Svetlana and Alexander Nelin was held as part of the seminar and event “Polotsk, the youth’s capital of Belarus” timed to the Year of Science. The residents of Polotsk shared their ideas of the book and its role in their research work and private life. Their sincere words and personal experience touched the audience, which shared a reverent and respectful attitude towards the book and the profession of a librarian.

Also presentations and exhibitions were held in the frame of the seminar.

Students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National library

On April 18, the students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National Library of Belarus as part of the environmental education and upbringing program. They got acquainted with the thematic book exhibition "Water is a wonderful gift of Nature" dedicated to World Water Day. The exposition is presented in the documents of international organizations reading room (room 207 g).
