The Virtual Center on the Activities of International Organizations opens a virtual book exhibition “Intellectual Property: Legal Protection and Management”, dedicated to the World Intellectual Property Day on the National Library of Belarus portal starting April, 22.

This international holiday emphasizes the importance of creativity and innovation in everyday life as well as the economic and cultural development of society. The day was established by the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in September 2000. The date of April 26 was chosen for a reason. It is on this day in 1970 that the international convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) entered into force.

WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to the issues of policy, strengthening of cooperation, provision of services and information in the field of intellectual property. Currently, 189 states are members of the organization.

WIPO and its Member States celebrate the World Intellectual Property Day annually by holding meetings, events and campaigns associated with this date. Their goal is to give the general public a better understanding of the notion of intellectual property, to show how its protection system contributes to the development of many areas of progress – from art to innovative technologies.

The World Intellectual Property Day promotes a general theme each year. In 2020, it is the key role of innovation (and intellectual property as its foundation) in ensuring the "green" future. This campaign will show how a strong and balanced intellectual property system can encourage the development of a green economy that can play for life support systems of the planet, and not against them.  Decisions made today define our life tomorrow. This once again emphasizes the need to redouble efforts aimed at creating sustainable national innovation systems and providing access to effective national intellectual property systems that contribute to the development and implementation of technologies, the creation of products and services that society needs on the way to the green future.

The National Library of Belarus has become a depository library for WIPO documents since November 2010. The proposed virtual exhibition will introduce readers of the library to the activities of the organization and its documents, including materials on international intellectual property law (conventions, treaties, agreements), the literature on copyright, patents and trademarks, annual reports and brief reviews of WIPO.

The virtual exhibition presents 54 documents from the library collections in Russian and English. These are books, brochures, booklets. A bibliographic description, annotation, and a pdf file with a table of contents are provided for each document.

The exposition includes the following thematic sections:

  • Intellectual Property: its Role and Place in the Development of Modern Society
  • International Legal Protection of Intellectual Property
  • WIPO Activities
  • Industrial Property, Patent Law, Trademarks
  • Copyright and Related Rights
  • Intellectual Property and Innovation Development. Innovation for the Green Future

The exhibition will appeal to students, graduate students, teachers of law and economics departments, company executives, employees of research and applied institutes, legal advisers and everyone interested in intellectual property issues.

"Soldier's Fate": on the 100th anniversary of Vasil Bykov and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.

On April 8-12 the VII International Scientific and Practical Seminar "Document Restoration: Conservatism and Innovation - 2024" was held at the Russian State Library. This is the largest professional forum, the main task of which is to exchange experience and improve the skills of restorers and curators of museum, library and archival collections from different countries.
