The Book Museum hosted the grand opening of the exhibition "Six Centuries of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy in the Collection of Antiques of the National Library of Belarus", dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the founding of RUE "Belfarmacia" on March 16th.
The development of knowledge about medicine and pharmacy is widely reflected in the pages of little-known books and publications stored in the National Library.
The exhibition presents most of the books from the library's collection in the following sections:
- medicinal plants (pharmacognosy);
- medicine;
- pharmacy business;
- the doctrine of medicine (pharmacology).
One of the oldest exhibits on display is the Herbarium of 1484, printed by Peter Schöffer in Mainz. The book describes and illustrates 150 plants. Woodcuts are hand-painted in green, yellow, red, and blue. Interestingly, the publication comes from the famous Nesvizh Collection of Books of the Radziwills.
Another "Herbarium" was printed in Venice in 1509. The book contains 150 woodcuts with images of medicinal plants.
A particularly significant publication on medicine is "Salerno Health Code". It is written by the Spanish physician and alchemist Arnold from Vilanova, presented in verse the medical credo of Salerno School of Nutrition and Disease Prevention.
Of great interest are the books that reflect the development of pharmacy in different historical periods.
RUE "Belfarmacia" is the largest pharmaceutical organization in Minsk, which is an integral part of the Belarusian healthcare system. The main goals of the company are to preserve the health and improve the quality of life of people.
In recent decades, there has been great interest in the history of domestic healthcare. Over the centuries, we have developed a rich and unique medical culture, which has creatively absorbed the experience of medical and pharmacy business in different schools and countries.
The exhibition will run at the Book Museum (room 347) until August 9th, 2022.
The closing date can be changed.
The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the opening hours of the Book Museum.
Admission to the opening is free. The rest of the time – with a reader's ticket or a social and cultural center ticket.
