A thematic exhibition “A holiday for real men: from the collection of the NLB postcards”, dedicated to the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, has been opened since February 21 till March 30 in the circular corridor of the 3rd floor.
The history of the Day is 100 years old and goes back to the First World War. In February, 1918 the troops of the Red Guard won their first victories near Pskov and Narva over the troops of the Kaiser Germany. These first victories became a birthday of the Red Army. In 1922 this Day was officially announces the Day of The Red Army. Later the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy Forces was annually celebrated on February 23 in the USSR.
After the collapse of the USSR, this date in the Republic of Belarus was renamed into the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus.
The exhibition “A holiday for real men” presents more than 60 postcards printed in Russia and Belarus since 1960 till 2016. Every postcard reflects the artist’s, designer’s or photographer’s individuality, but also is a witness of that time and is an important source of this Day’s perception for so many years.
Some postcards from this collection are showed for the first time. The material is placed chronologically. Postcards printed in Belarus in the 60s in the 20th century are of particular interest.
