From September 4, 2007 to September 28, 2007, in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (the 2nd floor, room 207g) is open a book exhibition "General Literacy - the Source of National Welfare" dedicated to the International Literacy Day.

The International Literacy Day was announced by the UNESCO in 1966 and since that year it has being annually celebrated on September 8.

This day reminds society that the one fifth of the world population can't still enjoy the right to literacy. Spread of literacy in the world and raising of its level is the urgent issue of the present.

In 2002 the UN General Assembly (resolution № A/RES/56/116) proclaimed the United Nations Literacy Decade. Next year the General Assembly (resolution № A/RES/57/166) adopted the plan for the United Nations Literacy Decade and authorized the UNESCO as the coordinator.

Almost 4 billion people can read and write. Every year grows the quantity of literate people, but the fight against illiteracy is still one of the most urgent and complicated issues. Despite the successful experience of many countries, over 860 million adults stay illiterate and 100 million children don't go to school.

The subject of the exhibition is literacy, which is the basis of the development and source of welfare of every nation. Development of national economy, eradication of poverty, involving of people into social life and environment protection are impossible without the raising of the level of literacy.

At the exhibition are exposed over 50 documents of international organizations (the UNO, the UNESCO, the World Bank etc.) in Russian and English languages: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials of the UNO (masthead), brochures, and booklets.

We invite to the exhibition specialists in education, professors, teachers, students, as well as heads and workers of organizations which render assistance to education.
