From 22 October to 22 November, an exhibition "Poetic skill for the translator" dedicated to the 100th anniversary from the date of the birth of Yazep Semezhon (1914–1990) runs in the Belarusian Literature Reading Room (room 205).


The name of the outstanding Belarusian translator, writer, critic, Honored Worker of Culture of Belarus Y. Semezhon is well-known in the world. His creative heritage includes translations from English, Hungarian, Italian, German, Polish, Romanian, French, Czech, Slovak and other languages of the world. The translator was awarded the State Award of Belarus named after Kupala (1982) for the translation of N. Gusovsky’s poem The Song about Bison from the Latin language.

The exhibition consists of four sections which devoted to Y. Semezhon’s literary and translation activities, his life. The first section "Eternity to the Spirit of the Original" displays translations published in separate books. These works became an important event in the literary life of Belarus and got high critics reviews. Among them are collections: Neapal bez sontsa (Naples without the Sun) (1955) –Y. Semezhon’s translation of Gianni Rodari’s works, Shatlandskaya slava (The Scottish Glory) (1957) and Vam slova, Dzhon Yachmen! (Speak, John Barleycorn) (1983) – translations of R. Burns’ works, Zhanna D’Ark (Joan of Arc) (1961 with N. Timofeeva) – translation of Mark Twain’s novel, a collection Apaleny lotas: vershy vetnamskіkh paetau (The Seared Lotus: poems of Vietnamese Poets) (1968), a collection of works by famous poets of the world ,em>Sem tsudau svetu (Seven Wonders of the World) (1977), N. Gusovsky’s poem The Song about Bison (1973, 1980, 1981, 2006, 2007), A. Mickiewicz’s poem Pan Tadevush (Pan Tadeusz )(1985, 1998, 2007, 2010) and others.

The section "The Discoverer of Treasures" contains numerous publications of Y. Semezhon’s translations into the Belarusian language which have been published in magazines and collective collections. Among them are translations of works of classics and contemporary writers of England, the USA, France, Italy, Germany, India, Poland and others, as well as the works of poets from the former Soviet republics.

Materials of the section "In the Big World of Literature" will be introduced to literary activities of the writer. It represents critical articles on contemporary literary translation, introductory articles to books by other authors, reviews, as well as editorial work of Y. Semezhon.

The section "The Mediator of Peoples and Cultures" tells about the life and work of the writer. I. Laptyonok’s book Paet-perakladchyk Yazep Semyazhon: admetnasts tvorchay іndyvіdualnastsі (The Poet and Translator Yazep Semezhon: Features of Creative Individuality) (2010) are noteworthy. Among the authors who have devoted their publications and poems to this wonderful master are N. Gilevich, V. Rogoysha, M. Kenko, V. Yurevich, E. Martynov, A. Martinovich, V. Vitka, F. Chernya, A. Zaritsky, etc.

The exhibition displays a lot of pictures.
