From March 30th to April 27th, the exhibition “The genius of love and hate” timed to the 270th anniversary of the birth of the Spanish artist and engraver Francisco Goya (1746–1828).
Francisco Goya is one of the first and the most prominent artists of the fine arts of Romanticism, an outstanding representative of the Spanish school of painting who embodied in his art the tragic fate and hopes of the Spanish people, its countless suffering and endless vitality. Actual events served to the artist’s inspiration. He did not just portray the surrounding reality, but also expressed his personal attitude to what was happening in his country.
Goya became a truly great innovator. He strongly rejected both the preceding and existing art principles and dispelled the myth of the ideal, revealing the stark truth unvarnished. His art is an inseparable fusion of light and darkness, good and evil, despair and hope, hatred and compassion, bitter pessimism and violent affirmation of life.
Goya’s heritage is huge. He worked in all genres: fresco (the domes of the church St.-Antonio de la Florida), historical compositions (Execution of the Rebels of the 3rd of May 1808), scenes (Paseo por Andalucía, The Wedding), still life (Three Salmon Steaks), and created some huge graphic series (Capriccios, Atrocities of War).
Goya also left an original portrait gallery of his contemporaries. In these works he caught with an extraordinary sensitivity the main features of the individual human nature and psychology, revealing their characteristics generated by the epoch (Portrait of the Duchess of Alba, Portrait of the Count of Floridablanca etc).
The offered exhibition present more than 50 documents – books, albums and articles about the biography and stages of career of Francisco Goya. Postcards and reproductions of the master’s works are on display as well.
