The National Library of Belarus offers a holiday book-illustrative exposition "The symbol of Belarusian theatrical culture” timed to the 90th anniversary of Yanka Kupala National Academic Theater.

For already 90 years Yanka Kupala National Academic Theater has been raising the curtain. Its repertoire includes modern plays, genre plays, Russian and foreign classical plays.

Traditional decision and modern form. Plastic metaphor and everyday authenticity. Tragic anxiety and satiric grotesque. Philosophic parable and folklore ceremonial. Sad melodrama and cheerful comedy. Detective and children’s fairytale... Multifarious, colorful plays staged at Yanka Kupala Theater invite the audience to a joint meditation.

All began with the historical date – the opening ceremony of Belarusian State Theater that took place on September 14th, 1920. That day three independent troupes – Belarusian, Russian and Jewish – shared the stage in Minsk City Theater. The Belarusian troupe included members of The First Association of Belarusian Drama and Comedy headed by F. Zhdanovich. They staged the play “Lynks” based on E. Ozheshko’s short story. Since 1922 the theater had assigned to the Belarusian troupe only. In 1944 the theater was named after great Belarusian poet Yanka Kupala.

The book-illustrative exhibition dedicated to the oldest theater of Belarus, offers a rich exposition. Encyclopedias, photos and albums, interviews with famous actors illustrations and other documents inform on the history of the theater (section “Yanka Kupala Theater: ways and cross-roads”), theatrical life of Belarus and the famous and outstanding actors of Yanka Kupala Theater (section “Dialogue through the stage: theatrical portraits”), and plays staged in the theater in (section “The unlimited space of the theatrical stage”).
