The exhibition "UNIDO: 50 years of development and cooperation" dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization runs in the Documents of international organizations reading room, from 5 to 31 January.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is a specialized United Nations agency authorized to promote industrial development and international industrial cooperation.

UNIDO was established on 17 November, 1966, according to the UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/2152(XXI). The organization includes 170 state members and has a network of 29 regional and country offices around the world. In June 2013 LI Yong was elected as the UNIDO General Director. The organization’s headquarters are in Vein, Austria.

The Lima Declaration, adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013, proclaims a new goal of UNIDO: inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) for developing countries and transition economies. In September 2015, the UN Summit on Sustainable Development adopted the Post-2015 Development Agenda, which included 17 goals of sustainable development. The UNIDO’s concept of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) is reflected in Goal 9: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation".

ISID is based on three principles: achieve common prosperity, develop economic competitiveness and protect the environment. These principles underlie all the areas of UNIDO activities, including technical cooperation, analytical and policy advisory, normative and legal compliance, promotion of knowledge and experience. Today, the organization is recognized as a significant, specialized and efficient provider of services to solve the interconnected challenges: reach the public welfare through productive activities, integrate developing countries into world trade through the growth of economic and trade capacities, enhance environmental sustainability in the industry and increase opportunities for access to energy.

The Republic of Belarus joined UNIDO in 1985. The cooperation is aimed at solving problems of national political and economic nature.

Belarus is involved in the decision-making bodies of UNIDO: the General Conference, the Industrial Development Board and the Programme and Budget Committee.

The UNIDO site promotes our country’s initiatives to establish a mechanism of access to alternative and renewable energy sources, within the United Nations. Belarus is implementing the Framework Programme for Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and UNIDO for 2013–2017, which includes a series of joint projects on modernization of industrial enterprises, competitive recovery and the development of scientific and technical sphere. Also it is decided to establish the UNIDO Centre for International Industrial Cooperation to support the Government’s efforts in the field of technical assistance to industries.

The offered exhibition includes more than 60 exhibits, most of which are the UNIDO documents in Russian and English: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials, brochures and booklets.

The exposition includes the following thematic sections:

  • UNIDO: history, goals and functions;
  • Main activities;
  • UNIDO and international industrial cooperation;
  • UNIDO in Belarus.

The exhibition will be of interest to students, undergraduates, teachers of economic disciplines, political and public figures, experts in the field of industrial production and the global economy, international law, world politics and international relations.
