From July 2, 2008, to July 4, 2008, in Yakutsk (the Russian Federation), in the framework of the International year of languages took place the International conference “Linguistic and cultural diversity in cyberspace”. The event was organized in partnership with UNESCO.

In the conference participated over 100 representatives from 15 countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Mali, Russia, the USA, Philippines, Finland, France, Japan, and other countries. Workers of the UNESCO, legislature and executive bodies, ministries of education and culture, scientific and educational establishments, libraries, and other organizations took part in the conference. In the framework of the conference Roman Motulsky, the Director of National Library of Belarus, will read a paper “Activity of National Library of Belarus in the field of the safekeeping and development of linguistic and cultural diversity”, which aroused a vivid interest of participants.

In the framework of the conference worked the following sections:

  • political, ethical, and legal angles of the development of multilingual cyberspace;
  • Internet and other media;
  • role of libraries in the safekeeping of linguistic and cultural diversity;
  • languages and education;
  • safekeeping and development of cultural diversity.

In the framework of the conference were read papers on realization of programs “Kazakh national electronic library” and “Memory of Yakutia” by national libraries of Kazakhstan and Yakutia. Information resources of Kazakhstan and Yakutsk libraries, archives, and museums were united in order to create national electronic information resources on historical and cultural heritage (available in Internet).

In the framework of the event took place the meeting of V.A. Shtyrov, the President of the Republic of Sakha with E.I. Kuzmin and R.S. Motulsky during which were analyzed the particularities of construction of library buildings and examined the project of the new building of National Library of Yakutia.

Besides that, at the conference took place the meeting with E.I. Mikhaylova, the Vice President of the Republic of Sakha during which were discussed the issues of the realization of projects in the field of cultural and linguistic diversity, the modern tendencies of the development of libraries, projects of the building of the National Library of Yakutia, and visit of Yakut experts to Belarus.

Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
