On April 22 within the framework of the professional development program "Cultural heritage as the basis of intercultural dialogue. Preservation strategies in Russia and Belarus" a seminar "Restoration of documents from the Great Patriotic War" was held at the National Library of Belarus.

The event was organized by the National Library of Belarus and the Margarita Rudomino All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature.

The seminar was attended by specialists from the Russian Federation of the Margarita Rudomino All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature, the Russian State Library, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the International Restoration Center, the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineering Troops and Communications Troops, the Sverdlovsk Regional Universal Scientific Library named after V.G. Belinsky, the Museum of Political History of Russia, the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, the Regional Center for the Preservation of Documents of Tomsk State University, the Laboratory of Archaeological Research of the Ural Federal University; from the Republic of Belarus – specialists of the National Library of Belarus, the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus, the Central Scientific Library named after Yakub Kolas of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Republican Scientific Medical Library, the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, the Museum of the History of the City of Minsk, the Central Laboratory for the Preservation of Documents of the National Archival Fund of the Republic of Belarus, the National Archive of the Republic of Belarus.

Within the framework of the seminar dedicated to the anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders, a round table "Restoration of documents from the Great Patriotic War" and master classes were held.

Viktar Prshybytka, Deputy Director General - Director for Information Resources and User Services of the National Library of Belarus, addressed the participants of the seminar with a welcoming speech. Scientific Secretary, Deputy head of the Center for Library Science and Professional Interaction of the Margarita Rudomino All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature Olga Smirnova, read a welcoming speech from the Director General of the Margarita Rudomino All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature Pavel Kuzmin. The participants of the round table shared their experience in ensuring the safety and restoration of documents in their organizations. The main attention was paid to the restoration of documents from the Great Patriotic War. It was noted that not only art objects, books and newspapers, but also letters, leaflets, certificates, applications for sending to the front, reflecting the heroic past of the Soviet people, are being collected, carefully stored, restored, digitized and made available to a wide range of users. The role of restorers and keepers in saving cultural values during the difficult years of the Great Patriotic War was also noted.


Within the framework of the seminar, three master classes were held on the basis of the Department of Restoration and Preservation of library documents. For the participants of the seminar, the head of the department, Diana Muratova, conducted a tour of the department.

The master class "Restoration of handwritten letters from the Great Patriotic War" was conducted by Irina Shilova, a restorer of the highest category of the Margarita Rudomino All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature.


Lyudmila Poltaran, head of the restoration sector of the National Library of Belarus, conducted a master class "Restoration of a newspaper from the Great Patriotic War on a leaf-filling machine".


Marina Savchenkova, Director of the Regional Center for Document Conservation at Tomsk State University, conducted the master class "Skinning on the Scharf-Fix machine".


The events were held in a lively, friendly atmosphere, allowed to exchange experiences with colleagues, establish professional contacts.

At the end of the seminar for colleagues from the Russian Federation, Yuri Domanov, head of the sector of the department of excursion and methodological work, conducted a tour of the National Library of Belarus.This unforgettable tour added positive emotions to our guests as most of them were visiting our library for the first time.
