The photo exhibition “The Gods of Perm. Image. Place. Time” will run in the library on 9 and 10 June.
”The Gods of Perm” is one of the main symbols of the Perm Krai (the Russian federation), the unique wooden sculpture representing the history of the region. The indigenous, who at all times were heathens, could not accept the icons after Christianization. In spite of prohibition, the people’s masters started to portray the Orthodox saints as carved wooden sculptures. These figures are all unique: they are performed in an original technique, represent original plots and, above all, the faces of the saints have the national features of the indigenous.
The photo exhibition reflects the history of the weird wooden sculptures: who and where has found them, archival photos, and also the pictures of modern photographers from Perm. The exposition includes the works of Sergey Tartakovsky, whose photos are compiled into the book The Perm Wooden Sculpture, the Perm master Anatoly Dolmatov, the Moscow photographer Mikhail Kalamkarov, and also the photographer Valery Zarovniannykh, who captured the life of the gallery, from the preparation of an exhibition to viewers’ emotions.
So the photo exhibition of the wooden sculptures and the history of their acquisition by the Perm art gallery present the collection of works of many known and little known photographers for almost a century. These pictures reflect the astonishment at the gods, people and land of Perm, and also a tribute to them.
The opening ceremony starts at 4 p.m. in the gallery “Atrium” (3rd floor).
The photo exhibition will be open on 9 June, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and 10 June, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
