From May 16, 2008, in the National Library of Belarus is open an exhibition “The Frozen Moments” timed to the International Museum Day.

On May 18 museum workers celebrate their professional holiday.

This Day was established in 1977 by suggestion of a soviet delegation at ICOM (International Council of Museums) regular session. This Day is observed annually all over the world.

It is considered that society expresses its attitude to historical and cultural heritage by means of museums. Collecting and keeping monuments of material and spiritual culture, museums perform an important scientific and educational work.

Events dedicated to this date are to attract the attention of society and mass media to the issues of museums and historical and cultural treasures. This is the urgent issue in Belarus. The first museums were founded in the XVIth century, but unfortunately the majority of museum collections are lost. A part of museum collections were destroyed during wars, other treasures settled in museums of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, and other countries. In Belarus was adopted the Program of the Museum Development for 2006 – 2010. According to the Program, 53 museum buildings are to be restored; museum collection registration system is to be computerized. Besides that, a united State Catalogue of Museum Collections of the republic of Belarus will be developed and 24 new museums will be open.

At the exhibition are displayed books on the history of museums, analysis of several kinds of museums, and particular museum collections. A particular section of the exhibition is dedicated to Belarusian museums which work is regulated by the Law of the Republic of Belarus “On Museums and Museum Collections of the Republic of Belarus”.

The exposition is located on the third floor of the circular passage. <>
