The exhibition of posters "The variety of cultures", created in the framework of the large-scale German program on the international cultural heritage preservation, was opened in the Library on September 27.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany has fulfilled and financed for 35 years the program on the cultural heritage preservation and cultural values protection. The program covers a wide range of activities – ranging from the restoration of the mural paintings in temples, conservation and restoration of important buildings, digitizing manuscripts to training programs for the training of specialists in the local population. More than 2.700 projects in 144 countries had been supported since 1981 till 2015.

Almost every day we are witnesses of the thoughtless and willful destruction of the cultural heritage. Shocking photos that we see in the news about the destruction of cultural heritage in Iraq and Syria are a vivid reminder that, there is a threat not only to public safety, but also to its cultural identity in many parts of the world, torn by crisis and war.

The exposition "The variety of cultures", which is organized by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Belarus and the National Library of Belarus, presents 30 posters about projects on cultural objects restoration in 9 countries (Iran, India, Brazil, Syria, Palestine territories, Myanmar, Morocco, Mongolia, Mali). Richly illustrated and informative posters tell about the saved manuscripts of Timbuktu, which are a part of UNESCO World Heritage, about a large-scale renovation of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, about the process of digitizing of ancient manuscripts – project "Archive of Syrian heritage", that are threatened by the destruction by the terrorists and looters, and about many other things.

The director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky stated during the exhibition opening that it’s wrong to disclaim responsibility for the destruction of cultural sites on the past generations, as it is happening now, but we can prevent it. It may seem that every single person is not involved, but together we can make this world a better place, he marked.

The deputy head of mission Anna Luther read the greeting of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Belarus Peter Dettmar. The Ambassador stressed that one of the main objectives of the project, reflected in the exhibition, is to promote mutual understanding and respect to different cultures, to protect the cultural heritage and strengthen the national identity of the peoples of the world. The Ambassador concluded in his speech that the country, which was deprived of its identity, is limited in its development.

The exposition will be opened till October 28, 2016 in the gallery "Rakurs" (2nd floor).
