A subject book exhibition "Intellectual resources of humanity” timed to the World Science Day for Peace and Development runs at reading room 207g from November 5 to November 30.

This was established at the 31st session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2001 (documents 31С/56) and since 2002 it has been celebrated annually on November 10. The idea of celebrating the World Science Day for Peace and Development had been suggested during the World Conference on Science held by UNESCO and the International Council for Science in 1999 in Budapest (Hungary). Participants of the conference had suggested this calendar holiday and had declared that the annual celebrating of this Day would manifest the contribution of science to the achievement of a steady development for peace and would lead to a better interaction between society and science for solving priority global problems.

At all times science has been regarded as a mover for changes. Scientific knowledge accumulated by human society during centuries has led to remarkable innovations which are of a great benefit for humanity. However, introduction of scientific achievements, development and expansion of human activity, along with their obvious advantage, have led also to deterioration of environment and technological disasters, have aggravated social disbalance. Today humanity has come to understanding that the future depends on preservation of global life-support systems, maintenance of peace and safety, development of close interactions between various countries, societies and cultures. Strengthening of the role of science for the sake of a more fair, prospering and steady world demands long-term efforts of all interested parties, both governments and individuals, on the basis of increase of investment, revision of investment priorities and joint use of scientific knowledge. The international scientific community realizes the necessity of a responsible use of scientific knowledge. Scientists of the world aspire to an active cooperation in all spheres of scientific activity: in the field of natural, technical, medical, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Having entered the XXI century, our society has realized that science should serve humanity as a whole and promote a deeper understanding of nature and society, improvement of quality of life and creation of a steady and healthy environment for present and future generations.

In the Republic of Belarus science plays a predominating role in social and economic development of the country and is the major productive force of Belarusian society determining efficiency, prospects and innovative ways of its development.
