From February 4th to February 24th in National Library of Belarus (the circular passage on the third floor) is open a book exhibition “Nature, our home” dedicated to the International Year of Biodiversity.

On December 20th 2006, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed year 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity. In accordance with the “Convention on Biological Diversity”, national governments are responsible for biological diversity preservation and sustainable use of biological resources in their countries. The Ministry of National Resources and Environment Protection has developed the “Plan of events to observe the International Year of Biodiversity 2010”. In accordance with the document National Library of Belarus offers a book exhibition “Nature, our home”.

More than four billion years ago our planet was a burning sphere with the surface covered with volcanoes and barren wastes. There was no life on the Earth. When the planet got cold, the life-giving atmosphere began to develop. Rains formed seas and oceans in which after particular chemical reactions life arose. It took millions years of evolution before a sole cell transformed into the amazing world of biological diversity on the Earth.

The nature provides everything necessary for human life. Biological resources are the basis on which human civilizations arise. However these resources are not eternal.

The human influence on the environment is often destructive. Industrial wastes fall into rivers and lakes destroying life in there. The air gets polluted with exhaust gases and smoke from combustible fuel, the ozone layer is being destroyed that leads to climatic change. The planet faces the ecological catastrophe, therefore it is important to provide, at all levels, a reasonable use and renewal of natural resources and biodiversity preservation. Hunting restrictions, protection of habitats of animals, creation of reserves and struggle against pollution of the environment – here are the measures which promote preservation of biological variety on the planet.

The book exhibition “Nature, our home” presents materials on the diversity of flora and fauna, world national parks and reserves, ecological issues and ways of solving. A particular section of the exhibition is dedicated to the environment protection and biodiversity preservation in the Republic of Belarus.

There are interesting illustrated encyclopedias, dictionaries, albums and guidebooks displayed, in particular “The Red Book of Belarus” in two volumes and the encyclopedia on Belarusian water resources “The Blue Treasure of Belarus” which won the national contest “Art of a Book” as the best encyclopedic edition. The album “The Miracle of Belovezhskaya Pushcha” timed to the 600th anniversary of the national park of Belarus shows how our far ancestors cared for species diversity of flora and fauna.

The offered exhibition is not only a fascinating story about wildlife. We hope sincerely that the exhibition will help to realize that we all have a responsibility to next generations, and both a separate person and the whole society are capable to prevent the ecological catastrophe which can turn our planet back into a “burning sphere”.
