From June 16, 2008, to July 13, 2008, in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (second floor, room 207g) is open a book exhibition "Refugees: Time and Fate" dedicated to the World Refugee Day.
This Day was established by the UN General Assembly and it is observed annually on June 20 since 2001. The World Refugee Day is a tribute to the strength of mind and courage of millions people who went through incredible troubles to begin a new life and become full-fledged members of society.
Refugees don’t leave their home voluntarily. They have to save themselves from wars, armed conflicts, and persecution. They often escape to save their lives, secure their families, and find protection.
In 1950 the UN General Assembly established the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OUNHCHR). Today the OUNHCHR renders assistance to 33 million people half of which are refugees or persons seeking refuge.
The exhibition acquaints visitors with the activity of international, non-governmental, and human rights organizations in the field of protection of refugees and their adaptation and integration in the countries that granted them asylum.
Materials displayed at the exhibition acquaint visitors with the status of refugees, the OUNHCHR activities, and internal and foreign policy of the Republic of Belarus in the field of refugees’ rights protection.
The exhibition includes the following sections:
• status of refugees in the world;
• refugees in the modern and international law;
• the OUNHCHR and refugees’ rights protection;
• international cooperation and policy in the field of refugees’ rights protection.
The exposition includes about 60 materials by international organizations (UN, UNESCO, European Union, Council of Europe): books, brochures, periodicals, and mimeographed materials in Russian, French, and English languages.
We invite to the exhibition students, scientists, human rights activists, State employees, members of public organizations, and everyone who is interesting in the issues of refugees.
