From June 11, 2008, to June 25, 2008, in the Belarusian Literature Reading Room (room 205) is open a book exhibition “The Age-Old Call of the Fatherland” dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Anatoly Butevich, the Belarusian writer, translator, journalist, literary critic, and public figure.




Anatoly Butevich began his writer’s career in youth age. In he graduated from Belarusian State University philological faculty, Belarusian language and literature department. He worked as a journalist, reporter, editor, political activities, director of “Hudozhestvennaya Literatura” publishing house (1986–87), chairman of the State Committee for Printing of Belarus (1990-92), Minister of Information of the Republic of Belarus (1992–94), Minister of Culture and Print of the Republic of Belarus (1994-96). Since 1996 Anatoly Butevich worked as a diplomatic officer.


Anatoly Butevich was rewarded with numerous State prizes. He is a laureate of Belarusian Union of Journalists “Golden Pen – 2001”.


Children’s books are a considerable part of his works. At the exhibition, in the section “A brilliant master of a word” are displayed children’s books published between 1997 and 2003, and as well books published in the framework of series “Seven wonders of Belarus” (2001- 2006).


At the exhibition is displayed as well a book by the author “Beneath the Sky of a Belarusian Word” (2007) dedicated to the eminent writers, artists, keepers of Belarusian literary language, and the modern Belarusian literature.


Books by Anatoly Butevich were illustrated by talented artists P. Tatarnikov, T. Berezinskaya, A.Protasenya, V. Sokolov, and others.


At the section “Works by Anatoly Butevich published in journals and collected stories” are displayed recently published works by the author (stories, historical stories, drama, and others).


Anatoly Butevich also writes under pen-names Maxim Valoshka, A. Bayarsky, and Misha Alimpik. He is known under a pen-name Maxim Valoshka as a translator. Anatoly Butevich translates works by Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Yakut, and English languages into Belarusian, as well as works by Belarusian authors into Russian language. He translated books by V. Lipsky, A.Kapustin, V. Gigevich, E. Arzeszka, S. Lem, R. Mayevsky, D. Aldridge, and others. Works by different authors translated by Anatoly Butevich are displayed in the section “Translator, compiler, editor”.


In the section “A many-sided talent” are displayed books by A. Martsinovich, I. Solomevich, A.Karlyukevich, A. Khozyanin, T. Fitsner, and other authors dedicated to Anatoly Butevich’s life and career.


The exposition totals about 100 publications and is illustrated by photos.
