From March 20 to April 21, a thematic book exhibition "Water – a wonderful gift of nature" dedicated to World Water Day was opened in the Documents of International Organizations reading room (room 207g).

This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1992 (resolution 47/193) and is celebrated annually on March 22.

Water is the main value of our planet. Without it, the existence of human civilization is impossible. Water resources are absolutely essential for ensuring human health and well-being and are vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and other relevant goals in the social, environmental and economic fields.

Access to water is one of the human rights. Nevertheless, 2.2 billion people live without access to safe drinking water supply, which has a devastating impact on their lives and society as a whole.

The exhibition, offered to the attention of users, introduces the water resources of our planet, their condition and use, as well as the policies of states and international organizations aimed at protecting and preserving our most valuable resource. A separate section presents literature on the policy of our state in the field of management and conservation of water resources in Belarus.

The exhibition presents more than 100 documents in Russian and English: books, periodicals, mimeographed UN materials, brochures, booklets.

Among the exhibited documents are encyclopedias, reports and reviews of the United Nations and UNESCO, scientific research, regulatory documents, monographs, materials of scientific forums and conferences, textbooks, etc.

The exhibition includes the following thematic sections:

• Her Majesty the Water: oceans and seas, rivers and lakes

• Water resources of the world, their condition and use

• Water resources management

• International watercourses: protection and management of transboundary water resources

• Freshwater scarcity is a global problem

• Water resources and climate change

• Use, condition and protection of water resources of the Republic of Belarus

The exhibition will be of interest to scientists, students, postgraduates, specialists in the field of hydrology, environmental economics, environmental protection and anyone interested in the condition of water bodies and problems related to their restoration and protection.

World Water Day is designed to draw attention to the state of water bodies and problems related to their protection, to reflect on the role of water in the life of every person, on the problems of shortage of drinking water, the need for conservation and rational use of water resources. The main focus of this celebration is on achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Every year, World Water Day is dedicated to a specific topic. The theme of 2024 is "Water for Peace".
