The Union Electronic Catalogue of the Belarusian Libraries

The Union Electronic Catalogue of the Belarusian Libraries (UEC) is a system of consolidated electronic catalogues, which presents bibliographic information about the collections of Belarusian libraries.

The Union Electronic Catalogue of the Belarusian Libraries includes:

• the union electronic catalogue of the corporate catalogue system is a national corporate information resource based on four national libraries: the National Library of Belarus, Jakub Kolas Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Republican Scientific and Technical Library and the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus;
• the regional union electronic catalogues is a national corporate information resource, which represents the collections of the regional libraries of Belarus.

The union electronic catalogue of the corporate catalogue system is intended to coordinate the activities of the libraries of Belarus for the formation of bibliographic and authority records in the BELMARC national formats and the integration of resources at the country level.

The union electronic catalogue of the corporate catalogue system includes metadata of the republican libraries for the collections as follows: books, printed music and iconic documents (including rare and early printed books), theses, cartographic materials, periodicals, audio and video documents, international organizations documents. The number of bibliographic records makes up more than 6,300,000 bibliographic records. They contain detailed bibliographic information with information about the availability of copies of the listed types of documents and the ciphers of their storage in the collections of the above-mentioned republican libraries.

A corporate database of authoritative records is being built, which supports the technology of current cataloguing, to ensure the effectiveness of information search in the union electronic catalogue of the corporate catalogue system. The database includes more than 2,700,000 entries of personal, company, generic names, trademarks, geographic names, subject matters, forms, genres, and physical characteristics of a document.

The regional union electronic catalogues of the libraries of Belarus are intended to coordinate the activities of regional libraries for the formation of information resources in the BELMARC national format using the principles of corporate cataloguing, ensuring the integration of information library metadata resources at the regional and country levels.

They contain bibliographic data about the collections from 75 nation's library institutions (1,204 libraries) including books, brochures, audiovisual documents, graphic documents, printed music, cartographic materials, theses' abstracts, components of local history documents and electronic resources.

The main library, coordinating the catalogue formation, is Brest Regional Scientific Library named after Maxim Gorky. The resource contains over 763,000 of bibliographic records for documents stored in the collections of the following regional libraries:

The resource contains over 1,000,000 bibliographic records for documents stored in the collections of the following regional libraries:

The resource contains over 634,000 bibliographic records for documents stored in the collections of the following regional libraries:

The resource contains over 824,000 bibliographic records for documents stored in the collections of the following regional libraries:

The regional libraries operate on the basis of bilateral cooperation agreements with the National Library of Belarus, which provides coordination and methodological guidance on the formation of resources and performs the software and hardware administration.

The Union Catalogue is daily updated and tailored to users’ requests and the tasks of corporate cataloguing.
