On 17 November, the art exhibition “Succession” opened in the gallery “Panorama” on the 22nd floor.

The exposition presents works of students and graduates of the graphic arts chair of the Belarusian Academy of Arts, which is the true forge of talents.

At the opening ceremony the first deputy director of the National Library of Belarus Elena Dolgopolova expressed confidence that the works would be of interest and get a lively response from the visitors.

"Belarusian art is an experiment, flight of imagination and love for the Motherland”, the rector of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts Mikhail Borozna said.

It is symbolic that the exhibition opens on the eve of the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book printing, because the development of the Belarusian graphics school is very closely connected with the history of manuscripts and printed books.

The People’s Artist of Belarus, graphics and painting master Vasily Sharangovich congratulated students on the opening of the exhibition. "The foundation on which Belarusian graphics was laid keeps safe to this day. The skill and love for the country are the two most important components of this foundation ", he said.

Yuri Khilko, the head of department of graphics of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, donated to the National Library of valuable rare works of 70–80s.

"The Belarusian school of graphics is highly regarded around the world!” the Professor of the Department of graphics, book illustrator and painter Vladimir Vishnevsky said. “For example, cooperation with the Wrocław Academy of Arts has been going on for more than twenty years, and they’ve always pointed to the high skill of Belarusian graphics”.

All starts with the graphics: the pencil sketch precedes any design. Skillful use of lines and strokes allows the artist to create unusual and intricate images. The works, performed in the techniques of etching, lithography and engraving, embody the artists’ striving to grasp the essence of life, philosophically comprehend and summarize the realities.

The graphics are very attractive! It’s a pleasure to look at it, and there is always something to contemplate: light and shadow, day and night, black and white, line, stain, stroke, point. The graphic work is a mystery, intrigue, innuendo. The viewer can have very different opinions about the meaning of the symbols on these pictures. But one thing is certain: the emotional impact and the desire to think are guaranteed!

The art exhibition at the very height of the National Library runs until 19 December 2016. From 18 November, entrance to the exhibition is paid (see the Observation deck entrance fee).
