From May 24th to June 7th, 2010, in the Visual Materials Reading Room (room 307) is open an exhibition “Artist-romanticist Valentiy” dedicated to the 210th birthday of Belarusian painter Valentin Vankovich (1800–1842).

Most researchers consider him as one of the painters whose works symbolize Belarusian, Lithuanian and Polish cultures, and also the art culture of Western Europe equally well.

Happily gifted by nature, grown up in artistic environment, Vankovich lived the life full of an intense creative searching.

His painting “Mickiewicz on the mountain Ayu Dag” is considered as the manifest of romanticism in Belarusian-Lithuanian art where portrait expressions combine with personified inspiration and romantic sublimity.

The artist belongs to that Pleiad of painters who perceived creativity as their spiritual mission for improvement of a person and the human soul.

The exposition presents more than 50 documents – albums, books, articles, postcards and replicas of the painter’s works.

The exhibition is designed for all readers interested in the history of Belarusian art.
