From January 8th to February 6th, a subject book exhibition “Belarus and UNICEF – sides of cooperation” timed to the 60th anniversary from the date the Republic of Belarus joined UNICEF runs in the International Documents Reading Room (room 207g).
The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was created in 1946 by the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to aid children who had suffered during World War II. Since 1953 the organization has been part of the UN system as a special institution for protection and maintenance of the right of children to a safe, healthy and happy childhood all over the world.
UNICEF working in more than 190 countries is interested in all sides of children’s life – health, education, dignity, protection. The UN Children’s Fund is convinced that any progress is impossible without the maintenance of an environment favoring a full development of each child, and it builds its activities on the basis of this humanistic position. UNICEF appeals for cooperation to politicians and governmental and international organizations, carries out and maintains programs for the protection of children’s life and health and their physical and intellectual development.
The Fund is not financed by the United Nations and exists on voluntary contributions. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund is supported by individual, corporate and governmental donors. Accumulating funds from all over the world, UNICEF finances the child support programs, provides children with living essentials, and helps to create adequate living conditions for them and their families.
The Fund cares for children in emergency, victims of wars and other kinds of violence, natural disasters and extreme poverty. The major tasks of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund are the assistance to children’s early development, aid to children with special healthcare needs, prevention of illnesses, especially HIV/AIDS, promotion and protection of children’s rights.
The Republic of Belarus has joined the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in 1953. In 1997, UNICEF Office in the Republic of Belarus was opened in Minsk. On December 14, 2007, the Main Agreement on Cooperation between Belarus and UNICEF was signed in New York. The Agreement is aimed at the creation of adequate legal conditions and guarantees for an effectual activity of UNICEF in Belarus. During 1994–1995 and 2004–2006 Belarus was a member of the UNICEF Executive Board. In 2009 Belarus was reelected as a member of the UNICEF Executive Board for 2010–2012.
The cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and UNICEF is made on a program basis. At present UNICEF Country Program in Belarus for 2011–2015 is carried out. This is a framework document defining the strategy of cooperation between UNICEF and the government.
