From August 7, 2007, to September 3, 2007, in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (the 2nd floor, room 207g) is open a book exhibition "Indigenous peoples: on the way to the sustainable development" dedicated to the International Day of the World's Indigenous People.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People was established by the General Assembly and since 1995 it has being annually celebrated. The mission of this Day is to promote international cooperation in the field of the most urgent issues which confront indigenous peoples: culture, education, public health, human rights, environment, social and economic development.
Today it is well known that indigenous peoples are the most wretched and vulnerable. Their number totals 300-500 million persons. They live in over 70 countries and represent over 5 thousand languages and cultures. Some states claim there are not any indigenous peoples on their territory, whereas there live ethnic groups having their own language and culture and regarding themselves as indigenes. They aim to preserve their culture and their right to the earth and resources.
Celebrating the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People we pay tribute to rich and unique cultures of these peoples, but at the same time we remember which troubles they have to confront: extreme poverty, diseases, deprivation, discrimination and rejection of human rights.
The exhibition totals about 60 materials which acquaint visitors with the following issues: informing of indigenes and non-indigenes on culture, languages and rights, development of international standards and national legislations in the field of protection and promotion of human right among indigenous peoples. The exhibition acquaints visitors with the project of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and materials of the UN permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. At the exhibition are presented documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the Council of Europe and others) in the Russian and English languages: books, periodicals, the UNO mimeographed materials, brochures, and booklets.
We invite to the exhibition all who are interested in the issues of ethnography, cloture, and demography.
