From May 5th to May 31st, a book-illustrative exhibition “Young girls taking filed” timed to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory runs in the gallery “Atrium” (on the 3rd floor).
From the first days of war, women among which there were a lot of absolutely young girls; senior pupils, students – volunteered to the Red Army and national home guard. They took the most active part in fights. Over 100 thousand women battled in the ranks of partisan movement.
During the evil years of the war women took care of children, old people and economy. Women had taken up the burden of "man’s" professions to become the main laborers of the rear.
For service in battle, more than 150 thousand women awarded orders and medals; 86 became Heroes of the Soviet Union, and 18 of them were awarded posthumously. Biographies of Belarusian heroines are placed in the album >em>Women of Belarus – Heroes of the Soviet Union which was published exactly 40 years ago.
The exhibition section “The woman’s face of the Victory” includes essays “Heroines of the War” about women – Heroes of the Soviet Union, V.S. Murmantseva’s book “Women in Soldier’s Overcoats” and “Soviet Women in the Great Patriotic War” etc.
Also the exhibition presents the unique book “Young Girls Taking Filed” denominating the whole exposition. The collection of memoirs of women – veterans of the Great Patriotic War (front-line soldiers, partisans, memebers of underground organizations, laborers of the rear, survivors of the Leningrad blockade, juvenile prisoners of fascist camps) is compiled by Zynaida Korzh, the participant of fighting events, daughter of legendary partisan commander Vasily Korzh.
The role of women in the liberation of the country from fascism is reflected in the books by L.P. Ovchinnikova “Women In Soldier’s Overcoats”, A.G. Kartashovs “Soldiers with Plaits”, A.S. Panin “Women in the War ”.
The National Archive of Belarus presents a collection of fighting leaves and hand-written partisan newspapers. This is an original news from entrenchments and dugouts of 1943–1944. In special issues dedicated to the International Women’s Day, soldiers and partisans expressed the words of the true, at times naive but most sincere gratitude to " sisters in arms ” for their self-denying and inspiring work.
On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory the National Library of Belarus has prepared a virtual ”The Memory of Flaming Years” and CD ”Underground and Partisan Press of Belarus” .
