On 21 August 2013, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) adopted a new edition of the international statistical standard ISO 2789 “Information and documentation – International library statistics”.
The given standard contains recommendations for libraries and information institutions concerning gathering and presentation of statistical data. Its purpose is to create a uniform system of statistics comparable at the international level, provide an active use of statistical data for library management and forecast the main trends of library development.
The document ISO 2789:2013 “Information and documentation – International library statistics” is adopted instead of ISO 2789:2006. The decision on the standard update was made at the meeting of the IFLA Statistics and Evaluation Section in 2009. ISO 2789:2013 is prepared by the Subcommittee (SC) 8 “Quality – Statistics and performance evaluation” of the Technical Committee (ISO/TC) 46 “Information and documentation”.
The new edition of the standard includes indexes of digitization, development of open access collections and new forms of interaction between libraries and users.
