On 29th March, the presentation of the book by A. Kotovich and I. Kruk “Беларускае вяселле ў прасторы традыцыйнай культуры” / “The Belarusian Wedding in the Context of Traditional Culture” took place at the National Library of Belarus.


For the first time in the history of research of traditional ceremonial practices, a fundamental study of the Belarusian wedding has been made. The wedding is one of the most complex ritual and ceremonial customs which accompanies the important patrimonial event – creation of a family.

The book “The Belarusian Wedding in the Context of Traditional Culture” is designed not only for scientists, but also for young people who are about to make the crucial decision about their wedding, and their parents who wish to held the family celebrations according to primordial Belarusian traditions. For this reason the authors consider the wedding against the background of cosmic cycles and rhythms, as well as the system of socio-cultural regulations. The book will teach how to choose the wedding ring, what should be the clothes of the groom and the bride, how to decorate the wedding train, who from the relatives can became the wedding witnesses and matchmakers, how to define the way of the wedding train, how to prepare dishes for the celebratory table and many other.

At the presentation spoke: authors of the book, head of the Institute of Culture of Belarus, Candidate of Philology Ivan Kruk and Associate Professor of the chair of culturology and psychological and pedagogical disciplines of the Institute of Culture of Belarus Oksana Kotovich, and also Deputy Director for research and publishing activity of the National Library of Belarus, Candidate of Culturology Alexander Susha and head of the chair of culturology and psychological and pedagogical disciplines of the Institute of Culture of Belarus, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Elena Makarova.

Folklore ethnographic ensemble “Guda” performed musical turns during the event.
