On 30 August, at 3 p.m., a unique facsimile re-edition of the earliest ABC book, issued in Belarus and preserved in our country, – the Vilna "Bukvar" (ABC book) of 1767 will be shown at the presentation.
This event is organized within the framework of the Year of Book and timed to the Day of Knowledge. The presentation will include the ceremony during which the facsimile edition will be donated to the libraries of Belarus.
The renewed "Bukvar" is a unique monument of Enlightenment thought and spiritual culture of our nation (only 2 copies of this book is survived in the world). It includes not only a set of materials to teach children of reading and writing, but also the whole complex of texts having didactic nature: precepts, prayers, sermons and hymns.
The facsimile re-edition "Bukvar" is recreated in such a way to save all the features of the original (paper structure, scuffs and defects, notes in the book.) The book is republished with the historical and cultural essay that explains the significance of "Bukvar" in the history of Belarusian literary culture, and the translation of the text into modern Russian language.
The release of the facsimile edition of "Bukvar" is a great example of partnership between state and private organizations, as it is the result of a long collaboration between the National Library of Belarus and the representatives of XEROX Corporation in Belarus. The purpose of the project is to promote cultural heritage and the image of Belarus as a country with centuries-old traditions in the field of science and education.
The presentation will be held in the Educational Hall of the National Library of Belarus.
