A presentation of the book Francysk Skaryna. From a glorious town of Polotsk took place in the National Library of Belarus on May 3.
Interest to Francysk Skaryna’s personality has been from the side of Russian, Polish, Czech, German and other researchers for quite a long time. Thorough studying of his life and work in Belarus dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The first outstanding publication in Belarusian about the outstanding enlightener prepared by Sergey Poluyan appeared on pages of Nasha Niva. The name of the first printer appeared also in the literary collection Калядная пісанка, 1913 год. Manifold articles, popular scientific and educational editions, fiction works were created and dedicated to significant events, such as the 400th anniversary of Belarusian book printing, the 500th anniversary of Francysk Skaryna, etc.
A new fundamental edition Francysk Skaryna. From a glorious town of Polotsk, which includes publications of Belarusian authors, mainly popular scientific sketches, was published because of the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book printing.
As the book’s author, deputy director for research and publishing activities Alexander Susha marked, “Belarusians created Skaryna for themselves”. Turning to the image of the enlightener at the end of the the 20th century, publics looked for the history of their people and roots. That’s why it’s possible to think that the book tells how Belarusians built their national identity thanks to Skaryna’s image.
The chief editor of the publishing house “Мастацкая літаратура” Viktor Shnip expressed his gratitude to the Library and personally to Alexander Susha for cooperation, which resulted in a fundamental edition about Skaryna. By the way, the book became a laureate of the National contest “Art of the Book” this year. And it’s not accidental, because it was decorated by Vsevolod Sventokhovsky, one of the best modern edition’s designers, associate professor of the theory and history of design department of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts.
The editor of the publication Dmitry Petrovich, the deputy chairman of the Belarusian Fund of Culture Anatoly Butevich and the distinguished chairman of the International Association of Belarusianists Adam Maldzis participated in the event.
At the end of the meeting, there was shown a video-questionnaire about Francysk Skaryna prepared by Gleb Kufterin. The animation was another evidence that Belarusians nowadays think about Skaryna and realize the significance and greatness of his work.
