On 4 October, the opening ceremony of the exhibition “Francysk Skaryna: a journey to the Fatherland” was carried out at the National Library of Belarus.
The event is organized within the framework of the joint project of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Belarus.
Among the speakers of the event there were Minister of Culture of the Republic of Belarus Pavel Latushko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Belarus Wolfram Maas, guest of honor from the German Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences Wenzel Mathis, Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky, head of Bibliology Division of the National Library of Belarus Galina Kireeva.
A convolute from the funds of the Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences which contains 11 books created by Francysk Skaryna will be on display for the first time.
The exposition demonstrates the books of F. Skaryna from the Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences (Görlitz, Germany), including ones which can’t be find in the collections of Belarus, for example, The Book of Genes is with a beautiful engraved title page, as well as four copies of The Books of Samuel contain a famous portrait of the Belarusian first publisher and others.
The Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences dates back to the 18th century. Nowadays it is one of the main centers for the collection of documents, as well as an important information center of Germany, which holds Skaryna’s Prague editions – the convolute of 11 books. In Belarus the National Library of Belarus is the only keeper of Skaryna’s collection of books (10 books of the Bible, published in Prague in 1517–1519).
The exhibition of Skaryna’s first editions runs in the Book Museum of the National Library of Belarus from 4 to 13 October 2012.
