George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950) is one of the most honorable figures in the history of English and world literature. More than 70 years of his life he had given to literary work, having tried his hand at a variety of genres as a writer, publicist, and musical, theatrical and art critic. The legacy of this major English writer of the late XIX and early XX century is part of the world treasury of literature.
The anniversary exhibition presents about 100 documents: collected works, publications of the author’s lifetime, collected plays, books about his life and career.
The lifetime publications, such as The Complete Works in 6 volumes (Moscow, 1911), the comedy The Man of Destiny (Petersburg, 1909) and the drama Saint Joan (Petersburg, 1924) are on display.
The modern editions are represented by The Complete Works in 6 volumes, published by the publishing house "Iskusstvo" in 1978, as well as collections and separately published works of the famous playwright.
The exhibition also presents the author’s biography books. Hesketh Pearson’s Bernard Shaw is a unique attempt to penetrate the complex inner world of the writer by giving him the opportunity to tell about himself. The book, written in the first person, is an invaluable material about the life and work of George Bernard Shaw.
The exhibition is designed for all readers interested in the life and work of the famous British writer and playwright.
