The English writer Henry Rider Haggard (1856–1925), author of manifold historical and adventure novels, is well known in England and beyond. His works combine real history and unquenchable fiction, and heroes’ trials contribute to the dynamism of narration from the first to the last page. Haggard wrote more than 60 books – novels, storybooks, publicistic and socio-political publications.
The anniversary exhibition offers nearly 100 editions – stories, novels, storybooks, biographical and critical materials about writer’s work.
The exposition includes Collected works in 12 volumes, published in Moscow in 1994, and lifetime edition She. A history of adventure (Leipzig, 1887),She (Krakow, 1925).
The book King Solomon’s Mines. She. Cleopatra, published in Moscow in 2007 in series of Books on world literature. The edition includes an insightful foreword The Truth of Rider Haggard by M. Tugusheva.
The exhibition presents the book The Work of Henry Rider Haggard and the English Literature of the end of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th centuries by N. Sadomskaya. The monograph reveals the creative development of the famous writer, which biographic facts help understand the idea of his works. Esthetical, religious, philosophical looks of Haggard and his publicism are analyzed. Haggard’s heritage is presented in a wide cultural and literary context: his essays are compared with works of R. Stevenson, A. Conan Doyle, W. Henley, and many others.
