Calderwood Norton, J. Freedom of religious organizations / J. Calderwood Norton. – New York : Oxford Univ. Press, 2016. – XVII, 232 p.
Шифр НББ: 1И//819411(039)

Religious freedom is now widely accepted as fundamental to any liberal democracy. It is recognised in domestic, regional, and international human rights instruments and its importance is lauded by philosophers, lawyers, judges, clergy, and even politicians. While it is easy to support religious freedom in the abstract, tensions can arise between the activities of religious organizations and the law that challenge this general commitment to religious freedom.

By exploring potential conflicts between the law and religious organizations, and examining whether the current British response to such conflicts is justified, this book considers when English law ought to apply to religious organizations and how these conflicts should be dealt with.

From Kurdistan to Somaliland, Xinjiang to South Yemen, all secessionist movements hope to secure newly independent states of their own. Most will not prevail. The existing scholarly wisdom provides one explanation for success, based on authority and control within the nascent states. With the aid of an expansive new dataset and detailed case studies, this book provides an alternative account. It argues that the strongest members of the international community have a decisive influence over whether today's secessionists become countries tomorrow and that, most often, their support is conditioned on parochial political considerations.

Democracy and civil society in a global era / edited by S. N. Romaniuk, M. Marlin. – New York ; London : Routledge, 2016. – XVIII, 274 p.
Шифр НББ: 1И//819480(039)

Democracy and Civil Society in a Global Era addresses challenges to the strengthening of active citizenship. The themes presented are linked to fostering a culture of peace and non-violence, the lessening of fear and insecurity in political, economic, social, and cultural terms, and the ability to live dignified lives. The commonality and universality of the topics allows readers from any region of the world to relate to them. Policy makers, think tanks and development practitioners may be particularly interested in this book, since it is about action rather than mere ideas and processes. It demonstrates how social movements can introduce and strengthen equality, inclusion, accountability, and the free flow of information, which, in turn, contribute s to the acculturation of freedom and social justice, in the developed world just as much as in the developing world.

Jensen, S. L. B. The making of international human rights: the 1960s, decolonization and the reconstruction of global values / S. L. B. Jensen. – New York [etc.] : Cambridge Univ. Press, 2017. – XI, 313 p.
Шифр НББ: 1И//819441(039)

This book fundamentally reinterprets the history of international human rights in the post-1945 era by documenting how pivotal the Global South was for their breakthrough. In stark contrast to other contemporary human rights historians who have focused almost exclusively on the 1940s and the 1970s – heavily privileging Western agency – Steven L. B. Jensen convincingly argues that it was in the 1960s that universal human rights had their breakthrough. This work focuses on a core group of states, namely Jamaica, Liberia, Ghana, and the Philippines, that transformed the norms upon which the international community today is built. Their efforts in the 1960s post-colonial moment laid the foundation for the human rights revolution in the 1970s, when Western activists and states began to embrace human rights values.

Routledge handbook of global citizenship studies / edited by E. F. Isin, P. Nyers. – London ; New York : Routledge, 2014. – XXII, 621 p.
Шифр НББ: 1И//819481(039)

The Routledge Handbook of Global Citizenship Studies takes into account the globalizing moment and at the same time, it considers how the global perspective exposes the strains and discords in the concept of ‘citizenship’ as it is understood today. With over fifty contributions from international, interdisciplinary experts, the Handbook features state-of-the-art analyses of the practices and enactments of citizenship across broad continental regions, as well as deterritorialized forms of citizenship (diasporicity and indigeneity). Through these analyses, the Handbook provides a deeper understanding of citizenship in both empirical and theoretical terms.

Self-constitution of European society: beyond EU politics, law and governance / edited by J. Přibáň. – London ; New York : Routledge, 2016. – X, 346 p.
Шифр НББ: 1И//819437(039)

This book critically discusses the emerging notion of European constitutionalism, its varieties and different contextualization in theories of EU law, general jurisprudence, sociology of law, political theory and sociology. The authors address different problems of the relationship between the constitutional state and non-state constitutionalizations and critically analyze general theories of constitutional monism, dualism and pluralism and their juridical and political uses. This collection simultaneously describes the EU and its self-constitution as one polity, differentiated society and shared community and its contributors conceptualize the sense of common identity and solidarity in the context of the post-sovereign multitude of European society.

Socio-economic human rights in essential public services provision / edited by M. Hesselman, A. Hallo de Wolf, B. Toebes. – New York ; London : Routledge, 2017. – XII, 334 p.
Шифр НББ: 1И//819586(039)

There is a clear overlap between securing socio-economic human rights for all persons and arranging adequate access to essential public services across society. Both are necessary to realize thriving, inclusive societies, with adequate living standards for all, based on human dignity. This edited volume brings together the two topics for the first time. In particular, it identifies the common challenges for essential public services provision and socio-economic human rights realization, and it explores how socio-economic rights law can be harnessed to reinforce better access to services. An important aim of this book is to understand how international socio-economic human rights law and guideposts can be used and strengthened to improve access to services, and assess socio-economic, legal and policy decisions.
