Brief information about the island of Java

Java is an island of Indonesia; Jakarta – the capital of Indonesian – is located there.

It is the world’s most populous island: 140 million people live on the territory of approximately 130 thousand km ². The area of the island is 1 000 km, it has 120 volcanoes and about 30 % of the island is covered with jungle.

Java has a very interesting history. The first states on its territory had been formed in about 3rd century and existed until the middle of the 17th century when the East India Company began a gradual colonization of the island. In the time of the Dutch governing the capital of Indonesia was Batavia (now Jakarta) located on Java.

For a long time Indonesia belonged to the Dutch colonial empire. During the Second World War it was occupied by the Japanese, and when the invaders had left the country Indonesia declared its independence in 1945. However, before the Indonesians became independent, they had passed through the First and Second Colonial Wars with the Netherlands that only at the end of 1948 recognized the independence of Indonesia.

Java is distinguished with its unique combination of different traditions and cultures, the beauty and richness of nature. Sightseeing and a rich historical heritage make the island extremely interesting to visit and explore.
