Minsk

Minsk

Minsk is the capital city of the Republic of Belarus, the center of Minsk Region and Minsk District.

It was first mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years, 1067; the Chronicles names are Mensk, Menesk.

In the late 11th – early 12th centuries: the center of Minsk Principality.
From the beginning of the 14th century: in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1499, the city received the Magdeburg Law.
In 1793, the city was annexed to the Russian Empire. Since 1796: the center of Minsk Governorate.
Since 1921: in the Byelorussian SSR. In 1924–1930: the center of Minsk District. Since 1934: the center of Minsk Region. Since 1938: the center of Minsk Oblast.

The city is located on the river Svisloch.
