Kaygorodov, Mikhail

9 Михаил Никифорович Кайгородов.jpgMikhail Kaygorodov(1853–1918) was general of infantry and commandant of the Grodno Fortress (1915–1916). He was born in Polotsk, in a family of hereditarily noblemen and military men, graduated from the 2nd Military Gymnasium, Mikhailovsky Artillery School (1970) and Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff.

In 1913, he was appointed commandant of Grodno Fortress, and later he was promoted to general of infantry.

At the initial stage of the First World War, the fortress in Grodno was in the rear, but in 1915 the fortress garrison took part in the hostilities. On August 21, 1915, during the Great Retreat, the fortress was abandoned by Russian troops. Then the military court began investigating the abandonment of the fortress: the case was called “Case of Materials for Investigating the Situation in which the Grodno Fortifications Were Left”, and Kaygorodov was accused of having misjudged the situation. As a result, Grodno Fortress passed into the hands of the enemy a day earlier than required, which adversely affected the overall operational situation of the entire Western Front.

Even after the enemy consolidated the position in Grodno Fortress, Mikhail Kaygorodov was still its commandant for about a year. Later he was transferred to the reserve at the headquarters of Minsk military district (1916). Kaygorodov together with Prezhentsov is the author of the “Collection of Tactical Tasks for the Plans of the Western Frontier Space”.

Honors:
Order of St. Vladimir 2nd degree (1915);
Order of the White Eagle with Swords (1915).
