Mamontov ,Vladimir

17 Владимир Петрович Мамонтов.jpg Vladimir Mamontov (1866–1916) was a military commander, artillery inspector of the 5th Army and general of artillery. He was a nobleman, born in a military family, Mogilev province. Mamontov graduated from Bakhtin Cadet Corps in Orlovsk (1884), and Mikhailovsky Artillery School (1887). He was sent to the 23rd Artillery Brigade (1908) as a division commander. Later on he headed various artillery brigades as a major general (1910–1913): 2nd Reserve, 26th and 1st Grenadier. He participated in the battles against Austria-Hungary and Germany with the 1st Grenadier Artillery Brigade. In October 1914, he was appointed inspector of artillery of the 28th Army Corps, and then head of artillery at the siege of the Przemysl Fortress. He participated in battles with the Austrians at the fortress of Przemysl on the day of its delivery on March 9, 1915. He was promoted to lieutenant general (1915) for his military contributions and appointed commander of the 60th Infantry Division. In 1915 he participated in battles with the Austrians in the Carpathians and in Galicia, as well as in battles against Germany on the Dvina. He was appointed inspector of artillery of the 5th Army (1916). In August 1916, he was mortally wounded by a fragment of a heavy artillery projectile. Mamontov was posthumously awarded the rank of general of artillery.
