Stankevich, Anton

28 Антон Владимирович Станкевич.jpg Anton Stankevich (1862–1919) was a Russian and Soviet military leader, participant of the Civil War, major general (1917). Born in the estate of Gubin, Postavy district, he graduated from Infantry Cadet School in Vilna (1880). He reached the ranks of lieutenant (1884), lieutenant (1888), staff captain (1896), captain (1898), lieutenant colonel (1905), colonel (1910), major general (1917). He fought in the First World War as commander of the 329th Buzuluk Infantry Regiment (1914–1917). In 1917, he was appointed commander of the 62nd infantry division. He joined the Red Army in 1918. During the fighting near Orel, he was captured by the White Guards in the Oryol-Kromsky operation (1919). Remaining loyal to the Soviet authorities, he refused to go over to the side of the White Guards, and was hanged by them. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Banner. By order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the RSFSR, after the defeat of Denikin's troops under Orel (1919), his body was transported to Moscow and buried with military honors on the Red Square in a mass grave near the Kremlin wall.
