Faber du Faur
Christian Wilhelm von Faber du Faur (1780–1857) was a Wurttemburg Major-General (1839) and amateur painter. He took part in Napoleon’s military campaigns. In 1812 he served at a reserve regiment of the 25th infantry division of the Great Army. He arrived at Borodino on 5 (17) September, after the battle. Since 1849 he had been Major-General.
He created a series of drawings about the Russian campaign which were engraved and published in 1827–1830 under the name “Leafs from my Briefcase Sketched at the Scene during the Russian Campaign” (“Blatter aus meinen Portefeuilleim Laufe des Feldzugs 1812..., Stuttgart, 1831). F. von Kausler (his colleague) and R. Lobhauer made detailed commentaries to the engravings. The album which was republished several times is a very valuable graphic source about the war of 1812.
Faber du Faur aslo created paintings “The passage of Berezina” and “The Coffee House in Vilno”.
Faber du Faur’s watercolors depicting battle scenes were kept in the collections of the Wurttemburg king. At present the series of watercolors dedicated to the Russian campaign in kept in the collections of the Bavarian Army Museum (Ingolstadt, Germany).
