On July 28, 2009, the National Library of Belarus in association with Minsk Psychoneurologic Hostel #2 opened an art-project “Outsiders’ Art” – an art exhibition of works by artists who suffer from mental diseases.




The project has lifted the veil of secrecy and helped to learn more about inner world of people who suffer from mental diseases, understand them and see that any diagnosis or serious illness can’t keep a person from self-expression and self-actualization.

12 patients of Minsk Psychoneurologic Hostel #2 took part in the exhibition, among them - former artists, architects, military men as well as handicapped persons from birth. Though they are not professional artists they are artists from the heart. To them, painting is a way to express themselves and feel self-esteem. About 70 paintings and objects are displayed at the exposition. At the opening of the exhibition patients of the Minsk hostel presented musical and theatrical performances.
The project “Outsiders’ Art” is sponsored by Belarusian-Irish foundation for handicapped people aid, International Women’s Club, and the Embassy of Vietnam to the Republic of Belarus.


Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to the Republic of Belarus Dang Hyu Chang and Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Defense Marianna Schetkina participated in the event.

The exhibition dedicated to outsiders’ art which is a significant phenomenon of the modern art. An event such as that has been arranged in Belarus for the first time. The project which started in National Library of Belarus is to be continued in Russian and Belarusian art-galleries and museums where works by outsider artists will be displayed.
