On December 14, the library hosted the grand opening of the exhibition "Significant 85", dedicated to the anniversary of the Belarusian Union of Artists (BUA).
The exhibition is organized as part of the Triennial of Contemporary Belarusian Art, which introduces the best traditions and achievements of the national fine arts. The library has been taking part in a large-scale art event for several years.
Today, the Belarusian Union of Artists is a significant association for the country of masters of fine arts engaged not only in creativity, but also in organizing exhibitions, teaching, popularizing national art, and preserving national artistic values. The Special 85 project introduces the diverse, expressive, peculiar Belarusian painting of the 1950s –1990s, presents the works of outstanding Belarusian painters who made a special contribution to the development of Belarusian fine art, to the development and activities of the BSH, the works of authors who at different times held the position of chairman of the union, acted as head. They were awarded the titles of People's Artists of Belarus (or the BSSR), Honoured Workers of Art and culture of Belarus (or the BSSR), laureates of state awards, etc.
The exhibition features works reflecting significant stages of the formation of national painting, the influence of events in the history and culture of the country, characteristic features of the time, the choice of genres and styles. Masters of painting, the pride of Belarusian fine art, the authors of "Significant 85" – Ivan Akhremchik, Iaugen Zaitsay, Uladzimir Sukhaverkhay, Pavel Gaurilenka, Pavel Maslenikay, Vitaly Tsvirka, Nathan Voronay, Uladzimir Stelmashonak, Viktar Gramyko, Viktar Protasenya, Uladzimir Gardzeenka, Anatol Baranousky, Gauriil Vashchanka, Aleksander Kischanka, Georgy Paplausky, Leanid Shchamialey, Uladimir Toustik, and others. The artists convey the difficult post-war period, the restoration of the country, pay great attention to the landscapes of the Motherland, images of the working class and Belarusian artists. Portraits and landscapes are imbued with a romantic whiff of the 70s – 80s. The avant-garde search of the 80s – 90s is felt in the still lifes and compositions. In general, painting is characterized by a deep generalization beyond the content, the "description" always goes beyond the subject and the plot.
The exhibition also exhibits rare documents on the activities of the oldest public creative organization in Belarus, catalogs of collective and personal exhibitions, catalog albums of exhibitions of the union and its individual sections, thematic articles by art historians in republican magazines devoted to the history of its creation and activities.
The library, as the keeper of national history and culture, is proud to present the "Significant 85" – the result of fruitful work with the rich funds of the Belarusian Union of Artists. Many joint projects with the union have been implemented, we hope that even brighter ones are ahead.
The event was attended by Deputy Director General of the National Library of Belarus Viktar Pshybytka, First Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Artists, art historian Natalia Sharangovich, chief curator of the funds of the Belarusian Union of Artists Ekaterina Pinchuk, Head of the Department of Image of the Art Faculty of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, Professor, People's Artist of Belarus Uladimir Toustik.
